Trump Promises Pardons If Elected Again

In Brief:

Donald Trump is promising pardons for those who admit misconduct during the  January 6 protest. But, several of his fellow Republicans are not on the same page.

The Background:

Former President Donald Trump has been floating the idea of full pardons for participants in the January 6th protest. However, many elected officials in his party are not having it.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who is normally one of Trump’s closest allies, has stated it is a “bad idea” and “pardons are given to people who admit misconduct, rehabilitate themselves. They’re not supposed to be used for other purposes.”

Graham is not alone in considering Trump’s promise inappropriate. “I don’t think potential candidates should hold pardons out as a promise,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), who is usually a reliable Trump ally. “It’s somewhat problematic for me on a moral level and an ethical level — sort of like promising other giveaways to particular individuals.”

Notable Quotes:

“If he were elected, he would have a constitutional ability to do it. I would disagree with it. I think there was an insurrection and I think these folks need to be punished.” –Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD)
