Texas will bus Illegal Immigrants to DC

In Brief:
On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that Texas would be making buses available to send illegal immigrants who are released into Texas directly to Washington D.C. When questioned about the governor’s decision, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said it was a “publicity stunt” because Texas can’t force anyone onto a bus. Currently, Abbott maintains that immigrants being allowed into small Texas towns are causing major problems.

The Background:
Since President Biden took office in January 2021, he has lifted many of Trump’s most effective policies that stemmed the tide of illegal immigrants coming across the southern border. During Biden’s first year, the number of immigrants flooding into the border states hit a 40-year high and numbered in the 100,000s per month.

Now, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is giving immigrants the option to travel to Washington D.C. on the state’s dime. Texas will provide charter buses for migrants to make the trip.

Abbott made his reasoning clear: "We are sending them to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border."

Jen Psaki is calling it “political theater”. "I think it's pretty clear that this is a publicity stunt. I know that the governor of Texas, or any state, does not have the legal authority to compel anyone to get on a bus,” she said in response to a question.

Governor Abbott is up for reelection in November and running against candidates who are campaigning on taking serious action at the border.

Notable Quotes:

"[Abbott’s] own office admits that a migrant would need to voluntarily be transported and he can’t compel them to because, again, enforcement of our country’s immigration laws lies with the federal government and not a state." - Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary
