Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) continues to call Dr. Anthony Fauci out over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, he accused Dr. Fauci of covering up funds given to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and asked Dr. Fauci to elaborate on whether he supported funding for the lab in Wuhan that has been rumored to be the source of the virus. Fauci later stated that he didn’t “understand what the problem is” between him and Rand Paul.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) confronted Dr. Fauci again over how he has handled the U.S. response to the coronavirus, asking him if he supports taxpayer funding to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Dr. Fauci denied that the U.S. gave funding to the Wuhan lab, and later told the media, “I just don’t want to get into that tit-for-tat with him. I don’t understand what the problem is with him, but I’m just going to do my job and he can do what he wants to do, and we’ll see what happens.”
Paul told Fox News, “He knows his group gave money… It’s sort of like the Planned Parenthood argument, ‘Yes we give taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood but it’s not for abortion.’ Dr. Fauci’s arguing, ‘Yeah, we gave it - the NIH gave it to the Wuhan lab, but they weren’t supposed to be juicing up viruses.’”
Many still believe that the virus emerged from a lab experiment, including doctors and scientists. According to the Washington Post, “...Last week, a group of 18 preeminent scientists published a letter...saying a new investigation is needed because ‘theories of accidental release from a lab and zoonotic spillover both remain viable.’”
“China’s a rich country… can’t they spend their own money on their research?” - Sen. Rand Paul
“I do not have any accounting of what the Chinese may have done, and I'm fully in favor of any further investigation of what went on in China. However, I will repeat again, the NIH and NIAID categorically have not funded gain of function research to be conducted in the Wuhan Institute of Virology." - Dr. Anthony Fauci
