In Brief:
Last Monday, Hudson, OH Mayor Craig Schubert threatened school board members with child pornography charges if they did not resign their positions. Schubert’s comments at a public board meeting were in response to writing prompts that asked high schoolers to write about graphic sexual activity. After the mayor made his comments, parents in the room broke out in wild applause.

The Background:
The Hudson School Board is under fire after it distributed an assignment called “642 Things to Write About”. In the assignment, students were prompted to “write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom” and then to rewrite the scenario in a way that they would be willing to show it to their mother. Other prompts also asked students to write sexually graphic narratives.

The assignment was brought to light after a parent became aware of the assignment.

Craig Schubert, Mayor of Hudson, took the assignment to a judge who confirmed that it amounted to distribution of child pornography.

Schubert made comments at a public school board meeting saying, “I’m going to give you a simple choice: either choose to resign from this board of education or you will be charged.”

His comment prompted the parents in attendance to cheer loudly.

Despite issuing an apology for the assignment, David Zuro, the president of the school board, announced that no board members have indicated they will resign.

Notable Quotes:

“I demand that there be cameras in classrooms as a matter of public record that we can pull and view what is being taught to our kids and what is being said to our kids.” - Erik Dirker, local police officer
