NY Republicans are Calling for Newly Elected Santos to Resign

  • Analysis, The Hill

In Brief:

Calls are mounting for newly elected Rep. George Santos to resign from Congress following the revelation of endless lies. Not only did Santos lie about his employment history, and education, he’s now even lied about his health history.

The Background:

There are padded resumes, and then there is Santos’ padded resume.

Recently elected 34-year-old George Santos’ is receiving calls for resignation after admitting to lying about his Jewish heritage – falsely claiming his grandparents were holocaust survivors – as well as where he attended school, the firms he did (or didn’t) work for, and even his COVID diagnosis date.

His claim about a prior COVID diagnosis has repeatedly moved depending on the tweet or interview, slowly backing the date up to put him in celebrity status as one of the first 11 hospitalizations for COVID in New York City.

However, Santos is refusing to admit wrongdoing.

“I was elected to serve the people of #NY03 not the party & politicians, I remain committed to doing that and regret to hear that local officials refuse to work with my office to deliver results to keep our community safe and lower the cost of living. I will NOT resign!” Santos said.

Notable Quotes:

“It has become clear that Congressman George Santos’ many hurtful lies and mistruths surrounding his history have irreparably broken the trust of the residents he is sworn to serve. For his betrayal of the public’s trust, I call on Congressman George Santos to resign.” –Rep. Anthony D’Esposito
