The recall effort to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) succeeded with 1.6 million verified signatures, although the Secretary of State threw out 20% of the signatures on the petition. The next phase of the process will be for voters to select whether they wish to remove Newsom from office, as well as select who they wish to replace him. Transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner has announced plans to run for governor of California.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) faced harsh criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. A campaign entitled RecallGavin2020 gathered over 1,626,042 signatures on a petition, requesting to install a new governor in his place. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber stated this week that the threshold of 1,495,709 signatures (calculated according to population) had been exceeded.
“This now triggers the next phase of the recall process, a 30-business-day period in which voters may submit written requests to county Registrars of Voters to remove their names from the recall petition,” Weber stated. “A recall election will be held unless a sufficient number of signatures are withdrawn.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) criticized the California Secretary of State’s choice to throw out over 400,000 signatures on the petition (although keeping 1.6 million “verified” signatures). Cruz tweeted, “I thought signature verification was voter suppression? That’s what Dems told us.”
A recall election has not been confirmed, but is the expected result.
Newsom has faced backlash over his decision to lockdown the state of California while holding different standards for himself and his friends (such as the lavish French Laundry dinner), as well as fining churches hundreds of thousands of dollars for meeting for worship in their own buildings.
Caitlyn Jenner, transgender activist and former Olympian, has announced plans to run for governor of California. Jenner’s team includes several GOP operatives, including former Trump advisors.
The last recall election in California was in 2003, when Democratic governor Gray Davis was replaced by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Unaffordable housing. Record homelessness. Rising crime. Failing schools. Independent contractors thrown out of work. Exploding pension debt. And now, a locked down population while the prisons are emptied. Hold Gavin Newsom accountable. Gavin Newsom must go.” - Recall Gavin 2020 campaign
