In Brief:

New York Assemblyman Michael Montesano plans to ask the legislature to file articles of impeachment against Governor Andrew Cuomo over his handling of COVID-19 in the nursing homes. The New York Post editorial board has called for a federal investigation of Cuomo after an aide leaked that Cuomo hid data surrounding fatalities in nursing homes.

The Background:

More incriminating information has emerged surrounding New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his decision to place COVID-19 patients back into elderly care facilities. The new information revealed by a top aide has led to requests of impeachment, as well as a federal investigation.

Gov. Cuomo’s chief of staff, Melissa DeRosa, spoke to Senate Democrats and revealed that the Cuomo administration was scared to share the actual data. According to DeRosa, “...We froze because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice or what we give to you guys and what we start saying was going to be used against us and we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.”  U.S. Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) is filing a criminal complaint to have DeRosa arrested for her attempt to cover for Cuomo. The New York Post editorial board announced that it called for a federal investigation of Cuomo following the news that Cuomo had actively avoided releasing data due to fears of an investigation.

New York State Assemblyman Michael Montesano has announced his plans to file articles of impeachment against Gov. Cuomo over his decision to hide the data surrounding COVID-19 deaths. "Resignation is one thing and I have to be frank with you, he's too arrogant to think about doing that. He's for himself, not for these people,” Montesano stated.

The New York Department of Health had reported in late January that there were 5,957 confirmed nursing home deaths, and an additional 2,783 presumed deaths, with around 200 deaths in assisted living facilities. On Wednesday, the state reported that the combined number of deaths was actually 15,049 -- almost twice as many. DeRosa’s remarks come several weeks after New York AG Letitia James said that Cuomo’s administration had undercounted nursing home deaths by as much as 50%.

Notable Quotes:

“A federal investigation may be the only way to get the full truth of Team Cuomo’s order to nursing homes, populated by those most vulnerable to the virus, to take in COVID-positive patients. Not just the ‘what’ of how many lives it cost, but the ‘why’ behind this madness, and the months and months of coverup.”  - New York Post
