Representative-elect Lauren Boebert is pushing for stronger Second Amendment rights for congressmen on Capitol Hill, stating that they should be allowed to carry guns at the Capitol. Democrats claim that members of Congress should not be allowed to bring weapons to the Capitol, for the safety of themselves and the public.
Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has stated that she intends to introduce legislation allowing members of Congress to carry while at the Capitol. According to Fox, she stated that Democrats want to interfere with Second Amendment rights by continuing to ban firearms within the Capitol.
According to current regulation, no federal or District of Columbia laws restricting firearms "shall prohibit any Member of Congress from maintaining firearms within the confines of his office," or "from transporting within Capitol grounds firearms unloaded and securely wrapped."
According to NBC, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) sees Congress members walking around the Capitol grounds and buildings with weapons “all the time,” stating concerns that not all are required to go through screenings and checks before entering the chambers of Congress. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has expressed his support for Second Amendment rights in the Capitol, stating that Congress members become a target "as soon as [they] leave the Capitol property," and therefore should be able to protect themselves from potential attacks.
"Threats of political violence are on the rise, and it makes all of us less safe if Members of Congress don’t have to comply with gun safety standards." - Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA)
"It’s a shame that Rep. Jared Huffman wants to bar young women from protecting themselves in one of the most dangerous cities in our country…Democrats know why voters sent me to Congress. They know I’ll do exactly what I promised. I am here to defend the rights of the American people. I will not bow down to their cancel mob." - Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO)
