Nancy Pelosi Wants Ballot Count to Overturn Congressional Seat

  • Executive, Horse Race, The Hill

In Brief:

Nancy Pelosi is on a hunt for eleven ballots in Iowa. The results of the election in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District are being contested, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants a recount. Although the election has been certified, and Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks has been sworn into office, Pelosi stated that she wants to ensure that every vote is counted and has stated that the election may be overturned in favor of the Democrats. This stands in strong opposition to her stance on the contested Presidential Election.

The Background:

The Democratic Congressional majority is a slim 219-211, with a few openings due to several members joining the Biden administration, and some Republican members passing away.

Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) won the Iowa 2nd Congressional District by a narrow margin of six votes.  However, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that she wants to count ballots, and believes there are eleven ballots that were wrongfully excluded from the election.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has condemned Pelosi for her actions, stating that she is hypocritically attempting to overturn an election in favor of the Democrats. "Right now as we speak, Speaker Pelosi and Washington Democrats are literally trying to overturn a state-certified election here in Congress. That's exactly what they're doing over in the House right now,” he stated.

Notable Quotes:

"Democratic leadership is trying to use brute political power to kick [Miller-Meeks] out and replace this congresswoman with a Democrat whom she defeated. You don't often see hypocrisy this blatant and this shameless so quickly." -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
