Following the recent swap of prisoners with Russia, NBC stated Russia had given Biden a choice between prisoners. However, they quickly updated their narrative to match that of White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The original article published by NBC stated the choice was Biden’s as to whether the U.S. received Brittany Griner, convicted of drug possession, or U.S. Marine Paul Whelan who was accused of espionage. NBC cited a senior staff member as their source. However, once the White House gave their release stating the only choice they were offered was Griner, NBC updated their story to match.
“An earlier version of this article misstated the choice the Biden administration was given over hostages. It was to swap for Griner or no one, not a choice between Griner or Whelan.”
David Whelan, Paul Whelan’s brother, said they are celebrating the return of Griner. “It’s great news. Any time an American comes home is wonderful news. I’m so glad for Brittney and Cherelle. It’s a wonderful day. ” Whelan further stated they were informed beforehand that his brother would not be released.
“That early warning meant that our family has been able to mentally prepare for what is now a public disappointment for us, and a catastrophe for Paul,” Whelan said. “I do not know if he is aware yet, although he will surely learn from Russian media.”
“I am greatly disappointed that more has not been done to secure my release, especially as the four-year anniversary of my arrest is coming up. I was arrested for a crime that never occurred. I don’t understand why I’m still sitting here.” – Paul Whelan
