Despite an aggressive push from politicians and the media, lockdowns have not worked to stop the spread of the virus. Data shows that California and New York continue to lead in Covid spikes, regardless of continued lockdowns. However, the media continues to push a narrative that the worst cases are in conservative states, such as South Dakota, who have chosen freedom over lockdowns.
According to Politico, California residents are fed up with lockdowns, especially during the holidays when they’ve already been separated from many loved ones for nine months. What makes it worse is the seeming hypocrisy from the government officials pushing for the lockdowns. Leftist politicians, such as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), have continued to push for lockdowns and severe restrictions, lecturing citizens on social distancing and mask-wearing, yet have been found numerous times to have broken their own mandates.
The media continues to shame conservative politicians and states, while simultaneously praising the leadership of California and New York -- despite the fact that Covid numbers continue to rise in both of those states. USA Today reported that South Dakota had record numbers of Covid cases, rivaling other hotspots throughout the world. Business Insider politicized the death of the grandmother of Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), going as far as to blame her grandmother’s death on her lack of severe Covid restrictions.
The media has failed to apply the same standards to New York and California as to South Dakota (and other conservative states), and continues to shame conservative politicians for failing to enforce mask-wearing and lockdowns. In reality, South Dakota has been over the Center for Disease Control’s threshold for excessive deaths for half the amount of months compared to the United States at large. The Federalist points out that both New York and South Dakota have a higher than average percentage of seniors, therefore it is logical for the death rate from Covid infections to be higher.
As the Federalist states: “....Lockdowns as the solution for any COVID situation is a belief held in spite of the evidence, rather than because of it.”
"It feels like during this whole pandemic, the people in charge have been acting like this is an experiment in a lab at Stanford. It's all about, 'How can we win the COVID death rate race,' with no regard given to any other real-world concern that impacts society like livelihoods, well-beings and mental health." - Rory Cox, San Francisco Small Business Alliance
“[Despite lockdowns], we are none the better as far as COVID is concerned. In fact in L.A. where indoor and outdoor dining are completely shut down, with indoor dining [closed] since July, the virus rages on.” - California Restaurant Association President and CEO Jot Condie
