Liz Cheney Asks for Democrat Votes

  • Flyover Country, The Hill

In Brief:

Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) sent out mailers to Democrats in her district, asking for their votes in the August primary, including instructions on how to temporarily switch parties and vote for her. Her opponents claim that she’s asking Democrats to help her salvage her career, and that she will quickly lose their support as well. Cheney has remained one of the least conservative Republicans in Congress.

The Background:

U.S. Representative Liz Cheney has become one of the most outspoken Republican voices against former President Donald Trump, causing her to lose support within her own party.

Now, she’s asking Democrats to crossover and help her secure the nomination in the Wyoming primary election in August. After facing backlash to her mailed instructions on how to switch parties before the primary, her campaign stated, "If any eligible voter living in Wyoming wishes to become a Republican, they are free to do so. That is their right."

While her statement is true, many conservatives are questioning her motives and accusing her of flip-flopping, after stating earlier this year that she would not form a “Democrats for Cheney” group.

According to a recent survey, only 26% of Wyoming Republicans support Cheney after her votes to impeach former President Donald Trump and her position on the January 6 committee.

Notable Quotes:
“What Cheney doesn’t understand is that Democrats will drop her like a bad habit after she’s no longer useful to them on the Jan. 6 committee.” - Carly Miller, spokesperson for Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman
