Kamala Harris Makes Space Force Blunder

  • Executive

By: Konrad Holden

In Brief:
Vice President Kamala Harris visited Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and said that the US Space Force would discontinue “destructive satellite tests” despite the fact that the US has only destroyed two of its own satellites since 1985 and has no plans for future tests. Harris also called on Russia and China to stop their satellite tests.

The Background:
In 1985, the United States used an F-15 fighter jet and a special “space missile” to destroy a satellite during a test. Then in 2008, the military shot down a US spy satellite that was broken.

Now, Vice President Kamala Harris, who’s responsible for the National Space Council, has pledged that the US won’t do any more “destructive satellite tests” though the US doesn't have any more planned.

She also called on Russia and China to stop the practice. Russia detonated one of its own satellites in late 2021.

The cause for concern is that floating space debris from destroyed satellites could cause damage to existing satellites.

Russia and China are the United States’ biggest adversaries in space and have capabilities to attack US satellites in orbit.

Two different members of Congress said Harris’ comments were “totally unnecessary” and do “nothing to deter our adversaries.”
