In Brief:

Last Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris compared the events of January 6th, 2021 to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 during a ceremony commemorating the Capitol riots last year. Her remarks came as part of a speech that called for sweeping changes to voting laws across the country. Harris said that “our democracy came under assault” on January 6th.

The Background:

Biden’s White House held an event at the Capitol to commemorate the events on January 6th of last year when a mob of people broke into the Capitol building while lawmakers were certifying the results of the 2020 election. Only one person was killed during the actual riot, a veteran who was illegally entering the building and was shot by a Capitol police officer.

During the event, Vice President Kamala Harris equated the event to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 saying, “Certain dates echo throughout history… Dates that occupy not only a place on our calendars, but a place in our collective memory. December 7th, 1941, September 11th, 2001, and January 6th, 2021.”

Harris was lambasted by conservative commentators like Ben Shapiro of the Daily Wire and the Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy.

Shapiro said, “I don’t think that 20 years from now if somebody asks ‘What were you doing on January 6th, 2021?’ that everyone will say, ‘I know exactly where I was.’”

Dunleavy called out the actual death tolls from Pearl Harbor and 9/11 to undermine the Vice President’s comparison: “The Capitol riot was bad, political violence is wrong, & people are being prosecuted for it. It wasn’t comparable to Pearl Harbor (2,403 sailors, soldiers, & civilians killed by the Japanese Empire) nor comparable to 9/11 (2,977 Americans & others killed by Al-Qaeda). Obviously.”
