Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she will be visiting the border today. This comes a week after former President Trump announced he will visit the border with TX Gov. Abbott on June 30th. Many Republicans in Congress have hinted or outright said that Harris is only going to the border because Trump announced that he will make an official visit.
Nearly 100 days after Biden named her the “border czar,” Vice President Harris will finally visit the border. The trip puts her in El Paso on Friday with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Last Tuesday, Trump announced his plans to visit the border and take a first-hand look at the crisis caused by the Biden administration.
This has caused many Republicans to speculate that Harris is only making the trip because she has been forced to by Trump’s trip.
Sen. Ted Cruz stated on Fox News: “Ninety-one days ago, she was named as border czar in charge of the border crisis. And she demonstrated strong leadership by doing not a damn thing, by going nowhere near the border, by doing everything she could to hide from the crisis. And so suddenly President Trump is going to the border. They realized, oh, crap, we've got to do something.”
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan also thanked Trump for finally getting Harris to go to the border saying: “She would never go without you announcing your trip first.”
The White House has denied that the trip was motivated by Trump’s visit.
“Let’s just say, there are no coincidences in Washington.” - Texas Rep. Peter Sessions responding to timing of Harris trip
“When the Vice President arrives I hope she takes the time to talk to border patrol agents, law enforcement officers, and border families who feel abandoned.” - Texas Rep. August Pfluger
