According to anonymous US defense officials, the US had an arrangement in which the Taliban would escort Americans to the Kabul airport. The arrangement was seemingly kept secret to prevent attacks from ISIS-K, an offshoot of ISIS. Taliban fighters escorted Americans in groups to the gates of the Kabul airport and handed them off to the US troops.
As the Biden administration scrambles to keep its promises to both Americans on the ground in Afghanistan and the Taliban, they are using desperate measures.
According to anonymous US sources, the Biden administration worked secretly with the Taliban to evacuate Americans from Afghanistan. In the agreement, Taliban fights escorted Americans through the crowds to gates at the Kabul airport where US troops took care of them. These group escorts potentially happened multiple times a day.
One US official said the arrangement “worked beautifully,” though many Americans were initially alarmed that they were told to trust the Taliban with their safety.
The arrangement was initially kept secret to ensure the safety of the American groups and because officials worried how the Taliban would react to the publicity.
Some of this comes “too little, too late” after an ISIS-K suicide bomber killed 13 US Marines and more than 100 Afghan civilians. Hundreds of Americans still remain in Afghanistan and private rescue missions by former soldiers are happening right now.
"Every day we're on the ground is another day we know that ISIS-K is seeking to target the airport and attack both US and allied forces and innocent civilians." - President Joe Biden
