Chicago’s mayor has rejected federal assistance in tackling the city’s increasing violence problem, instead calling for even more gun control.
As violence escalates in an already-violent city, Chicago’s mayor is insisting her residents need more of what makes the violence spread and citizens more vulnerable.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) rejected calls for federal HOPE response to the looting and violence overnight in Chicago, opting instead to push for more gun control.
A reporter asked Mayor Lightfoot about Illinois House Republican Jim Durkin’s calls for the National Guard and others to step in and restore order. She responded by making clear she does not want “federal troops” in Chicago. Rather, she wants more gun control.
Lightfoot called for “common sense gun control,” saying, “We cannot continue to have circumstances where anybody and their brother can go across the border, or into other parts of Illinois, and bring illegal guns into the city of Chicago.”
The Daily Mail reports that Black Lives Matter protestors are justifying their violence and looting as “reparation” for past wrongs:
Black Lives Matter Chicago said early Monday's looting of stores was a form of 'reparations' as the group held a protest Monday night in support of the more than 100 people arrested after an evening of violence.
Ariel Atkins, a BLM organizer, called the looting 'reparations'.
'I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,' Atkins said. 'That makes sure that person has clothes.
'Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.'
“We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons — that is hurting cities like Chicago.”
