On Thursday, House Republicans sent a letter to Nina Jankowicz demanding answers from her regarding her role as the head of Biden’s new “Disinformation Governance Board.” The House Judiciary Committee sent her a letter asking her to appear before Congress and give testimony about what she is responsible to do. They also requested that she provide all documents and communications dealing with the creation of the board so that they can be reviewed.
The Biden Administration announced the creation of a new “Disinformation Governance Board” housed in the Department of Homeland Security in late April.
Immediately, it conjured up images of the “Ministry of Truth” from the popular novel 1984 by George Orwell. One Senator has even referred to it as “an idea popular with Orwellian governments everywhere.”
Now, Republicans in the House are demanding answers from the Board’s new director, Nina Jankowicz. The Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee led by Rep. Jim Jordan sent Jankowicz a letter demanding that she appear to testify about her new position.
“The ability of Americans to engage in robust debate and conversation is the foundation of American politics, and there is no place for a de facto ministry of truth in our government. The very idea of a ministry of truth should be revolting to all Americans who hold our Bill of Rights in high regard,” they wrote.
Jankowicz immediately drew flak as the Board’s director based on Tiktok videos she had made singing about disinformation prior to her appointment.
“In addition, judging from your past statements, Americans can not and should not trust you with your newfound authority to act as the Biden Administration’s arbiter of the truth.” - Letter from House Republicans on the Judiciary Committee
