House Dems Distance Themselves from AOC, Return Donations

In Brief:

Three House Democrats reportedly returned donations from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). The incumbent candidates are facing tough reelection campaigns in 2022, but are distancing themselves from socialist Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. The Republican Party is expected to use this information in future opposition campaigns.

The Background:

A Politico report stated that at least three House Democrats have returned campaign funds sent from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

AOC sent multiple House Representatives $5,000 each to contribute toward their challenging upcoming 2022 reelection campaigns. She has been vocal about her differences with the national Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and presumably opted to donate funds personally as a way to help preserve the Democratic majority in the House without going through the DCCC.

However, the incumbent representatives received the money without proper approval and oversight. According to Politico, DCCC aides gave AOC’s office the wire transfer information without approval by senior officials. At least three representatives have returned the funds.

Sources told Politico that representatives in swing-districts were hesitant to be associated with the socialist Congresswoman, particularly due to the fact that the GOP would be certain to publicize the wire transfer incident in attack ads as proof that the Democrat party was entirely socialist.

Notable Quotes:

"We appreciate Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's ongoing commitment to a Democratic majority. Due to a miscommunication, some transfers were made in error, but that has been addressed." - DCCC Spokesperson Chris Hayden
