First Bus of Immigrants From Texas Hits DC

  • Executive, Flyover Country

By: Konrad Holden

In Brief:
On Wednesday morning, around 30 immigrants arrived in Washington D.C. on a bus chartered by the Texas government. The group is part of Texas’ new program that will bus or fly immigrants that have been released into Texas illegally to DC where “the Biden Administration will be able to more immediately meet [their] needs,” according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. A second bus is currently en route.

The Background:
The Biden administration let Title 42, an emergency health order from the COVID-19 pandemic, expire which allowed the Department of Homeland Security to turn away immigrants and even asylum seekers at the border.

That order helped stem the tide of hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants entering the country. When it lapses in May, Gov. Abbott expects immigrants to enter at higher rates and has warned border sheriffs to brace for a massive influx.

Gov. Abbott’s new program gives migrants who have been processed by the federal government the option of a free bus ride to Washington D.C.

Abbott made the case for his program by saying, "By busing migrants to Washington, D.C., the Biden Administration will be able to more immediately meet the needs of the people they are allowing to cross our border. Texas should not have to bear the burden of the Biden Administration's failure to secure our border."

The White House initially said that Texas’ plan to bus migrants was nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Notable Quotes:

"As the federal government continues to turn a blind eye to the border crisis, the State of Texas will remain steadfast in our efforts to fill in the gaps and keep Texans safe." - Gov. Greg Abbott
