Developing: J6 Committee to Subpoena Trump

  • Executive, The Hill

By Jackson Kincaid

In Brief:

The House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol voted unanimously Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump. The panel's chair, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MA), stated that the committee had an "obligation" to hear from Trump. This decision comes a year into the investigation.

The Background:

Thompson, who himself objected to the certification of the results of the 2004 presidential election, declared as he read his script from a teleprompter on Thursday: “This investigation is not about politics. It’s not about party. It’s about facts, plain and simple.”

The subpoena comes more than a year after the committee began investigating the incident. However, multiple members of Congress have previously stated that it was unlikely Trump would comply with a subpoena.

Breitbart reports that members of the committee were all hand-picked by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who had made the unprecedented decision to reject nominees by the minority party. Conservatives claim that Pelosi’s decision caused the committee to start with a biased and stacked deck against former President Trump.

This latest vote is due to claims of “new evidence,” as well as Rep. Liz Cheney’s claim that there was no way that Trump could have believed that he actually won the 2020 presidential election.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned as we continue to report.

Notable Quotes:

“Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago? Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total 'BUST' that has only served to further divide our Country.” Former President Donald Trump via Truth Social
