In Brief:

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) took to MSNBC last Monday to blame Republicans who are not wearing masks for the COVID-19 cases recently announced in the Senate. Both Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Stabenow said that among her Republican colleagues, the “majority are not” wearing masks and this was “frustrating” to her.

The Background:

On Monday last week, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan about her colleagues that had recently announced their illnesses, “What concerns do you have about the way the — protections against COVID in the Senate as you’ve all been working together so closely?”

Stabenow responded by saying that the senators are working closely together, but that many Republicans are not wearing their masks.

“People on my side of the aisle are uniformly wearing masks, unfortunately, people on the Republican side, the majority are not, which is also frustrating,” Stabenow said.

Last Sunday, both Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren announced they had contracted COVID-19 and said their vaccinations and boosters are keeping them from severe symptoms.

“My symptoms are relatively mild. I’m beyond grateful to have received two doses of vaccine and, more recently, a booster – I’m certain that without them I would be doing much worse,” Booker said on Twitter.

Warren also took to Twitter to announce her illness, “Today I tested positive with a breakthrough case. Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms & am grateful for the protection provided against serious illness that comes from being vaccinated & boosted.”

Notable Quotes:

“We know that this new variant is extremely contagious and we also know that it is not that serious if you have been vaccinated and boosted. So, I would encourage everyone to do that as a Christmas present, as a holiday present for themselves and their families.” - Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)
