Credit Card Companies now Tracking American Gun Purchases

In Brief:

The liberal left is at it again.  Credit card companies will now assign a special code to firearm purchases in the U.S., and may alert law enforcement if they deem a gun purchase suspicious.

The Background:

Fox News reports, “Rep. Elise Stefanik, (R-NY), along with 100 other Republicans sent letters to the CEOs of Mastercard, American Express and Visa, pressuring them about their reported support for creating individual codes identifying firearm purchases. The members argue the plan opens a backdoor to an unofficial gun registry in the country.”

The credit card CEOs rejected an attempt to create a firearm-specific MCC last year, stating that they  "believe that asking payment networks to serve as a moral authority by deciding which legal goods can or cannot be purchased sets a dangerous precedent."

However, the CEOs appear to have changed their position after Amalgamated Bank applied for a new Merchant Category Code (MCC) in June 2022, according to the letter.

Notable Quotes:

"Today's announcement is a critical first step towards giving banks and credit card companies the tools they need to recognize dangerous firearm purchasing trends – like a domestic extremist building up an arsenal — and report them to law enforcement.” — John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety

“I don't see how it works. I don't see why it's necessary. And the only reason it's being advanced is for a political gun control agenda.” — Lawrence Keane, National Shooting Sports Foundation
