In Brief:

John Kerry, newly selected U.S. Special Envoy for Climate, owns a private jet, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. Private jets can emit up to forty times the amount of carbon dioxide per passenger in comparison to commercial aircraft. Additionally, Kerry’s usage of the jet amounted to around 29 times the amount of carbon emissions per year compared to a passenger vehicle. This discovery comes months after Kerry accused others of contributing to “people dying” due to reckless carbon emission.

The Background:

According to a report from Fox News, John Kerry, despite being the U.S. Special Envoy for Climate, owns a private jet. Data obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shows that private jets can emit up to forty times the amount of carbon dioxide per passenger in comparison to commercial and passenger aircraft. Additionally, Fox found that Kerry’s plane had accumulated an estimated 116 tons of carbon between February 2020 and January 2021. The average passenger vehicle, in comparison, emits 4.6 tons of carbon per year.

Kerry and his family owned a private charter jet company for years, under the name Flying Squirrell, LLC. According to Fox, Kerry received over a million dollars from the company in 2013.

The discovery of John Kerry’s jet usage and carbon emission surfaced just as the Biden administration began the process of enacting new environmental policies. Kerry stated on Wednesday that the administration wants to phase out jobs that are labeled as harmful for the environment. He stated, “What President Biden wants to do is make sure that those folks have better choices… They can be the people to go to work to make the solar panels.”

Notable Quotes:

“So as long as we do nothing.. we are complicit in our acts of omission and commission of what we are doing to choose for our energy, et cetera. We are going to contribute to people dying. We are going to contribute to trillions of dollars of damage of property, and we will change the face of life on this planet.” - John Kerry, November 2020
