CNN anchor Chris Cuomo has been indefinitely suspended from CNN until the network fully investigates his role in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, defend himself against sexual misconduct allegations. Cuomo’s 9 p.m. show was often CNN’s most-watched hour of news coverage. Chris Cuomo continues to hold that he did not inappropriately assist his brother. CNN has not announced what will take Cuomo’s place during his suspension.
In August, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned from office amidst multiple allegations of sexual harassment and the attorney general’s investigation into the issue.
During the Assembly’s investigation, it was revealed that former Gov. Cuomo’s brother, Chris Cuomo of CNN’s popular “Cuomo Prime Time,” was quite involved in helping his brother defend himself.
The network suspended the news anchor while they investigate further.
"When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother's staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly. But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second. However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother's efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation,” a CNN spokesperson said.
Critics are concerned about Cuomo giving advice to his brother’s aides and also calling his media connections to learn more about accusers.
Cuomo has defended his actions saying that he only gave aides his “take” on what they should do and that calling other reporters was “completely business-as-usual.”
"It hurts to even say it. It's embarrassing. But I understand it." - Chris Cuomo, referring to his suspension
