According to a report from CBS, Chief Justice John Roberts is “likely” to order a full FBI investigation of the leaked Supreme Court opinion draft that hit the press on Monday evening. The leaked draft hinted that the Court might be ready to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark abortion decision. The draft was leaked by Politico but it is still unknown who inside the Supreme Court leaked it.
The political landscape was rocked on Monday evening when a draft of a Supreme Court opinion was leaked. The draft made clear the conservative justices’ opinions about Roe v. Wade: “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” it reads.
Even more damning is the draft’s assertion that “Roe and Casey must be overruled…It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
Now, Chief Justice Roberts wants to find out who leaked the draft. The leaked draft almost immediately spurred both pro-abortion and anti-abortion protests at the steps of the Supreme Court.
Carrie Severino, the president of the Judicial Crisis Network, said, “That type of leak is an outrageous betrayal of trust. The Supreme Court is the only institution in town that doesn’t leak, and to do this is a real attack on the institution of the court. Not to mention just an outrageous breach of trust to the justices to do so.”
It is not sure how Chief Roberts will vote or whether he will join the draft opinion when and if it is finalized.
“Chief Justice Roberts is likely to order a full investigation involving the FBI into the reported leak of a draft majority opinion, reports @JanCBS — as some question if it will throw the Supreme Court’s legitimacy into question.” - CBS Mornings
