BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors released a video “setting the record straight” on whether she and the Black Lives Matter organization identify as Marxist. Turns out, she's still a Marxist.
Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter organization, stated in June 2015 that she and her co-founder are trained Marxist organizers, according to the New York Post. After the rise in the BLM movement in the summer of 2020, conservatives shared the video and warned people of the communist foundations of the movement.
This month, Cullors released a video on YouTube that attempted to clarify whether the organization itself was Marxist. In her video, however, she did not directly address the organization’s stance. She did, however, state that she herself believes in Marxism. Cullors defended her beliefs by stating that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was accused of Communism as well, and yet is now celebrated as a hero.
“Am I a Marxist? I am a lot of things. I do believe in Marxism. It’s a philosophy that I learned early on in my organizing career. We were taught to learn about the systems that were criticizing capitalism. We were taught to understand why there were philosophies that were criticizing capitalism.” - Patrisse Cullors
