Biden's Homeland Security Knew Migrants Weren't Whipped

In Brief:

Last year, President Biden gave a press speech accusing border patrol agents of whipping migrants trying to cross into the U.S from Mexico. Photos purportedly showing evidence of such cruelty were widely published. Yet, is that what truly happened? Evidence now says no. And, according to the latest reports, Homeland Security knew it was false all along.

The Background:

September 2021 images showing border agents allegedly whipping migrants sparked outrage from all sides. The photos in question showing the alleged abuse were taken by photographer Lensman Paul Ratje. However, Ratje has repeatedly stated he did not witness any abuse or agents harming migrants. The “whips” in question were actually bridge reins used by most western-style horsemen.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, a Biden appointee, was informed almost immediately that there was no evidence Border Patrol agents had “whipped” or “strapped” Haitian migrants at the US-Mexico border. He initially defended his agents, stating that no migrants had been harmed, and confirmed it was simply split reins seen in the images.

Yet five days later, he changed his story as he stood next to Biden at the White House podium. The president stated, “To see people treated like they did, horses barely running over, people being strapped — it’s outrageous.”

Mayorkas then bolstered President Biden’s lies about the incident, stating, “Our nation saw horrifying images that do not reflect who we are. We know that those images painfully conjured up the worst elements of our nation’s ongoing battle against systemic racism.” Mayorkas did not correct the administration’s statement, leaving his own Border Agents to take the blame for a crime he knew they did not commit.

Notable Quotes:

“Alejandro Mayorkas defamed his own employees in order to score political points. He has violated his oath of office and lied to the American people with a straight face. His career should be over.”
