In Brief:
Nearly 8 months after announcing he will declare an end of COVID-era National Emergencies, Biden will officially declare COVID over on May 11th. The National Emergency has been in place since former-President Donald Trump declared the COVID-19 pandemic a national emergency on March 13, 2020.
The Background:
During a pre-midterm interview in September 2022, Biden stated that the pandemic is over. Biden has now declared he will make it official. Yet many conservatives are confused since the Senate passed bipartisan legislation to end the state of emergency in November of 2022.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) tweeted, "Republicans are already getting results. This week we are voting to end the COVID emergency. In response, Biden announces HE IS going to end the COVID-19 emergency declarations. Now that Biden is trying to avoid embarrassment, how will Democrats vote? What about the vax mandates?"
However, some are also skeptical that this is more to do about immigration than national health. With the official end of COVID, comes the end of Title 42, which allowed law enforcement authorities to swiftly send migrants back across the border.
