The Biden Administration is working with social media companies to suppress anti-vaccine posts on social media, according to the New York Post. Facebook, Twitter, and Google have stated their intention to lessen “misinformation” on their sites, and reportedly are in communication with the White House.
The New York Post has reported that the White House is working with social media to limit “anti-vaxxer” content online. According to Reuters, President Biden has labeled the vaccine distribution a “wartime effort.”
The campaign to end anti-vaccine material on social media follows a recent anti-vaccine protest in Los Angeles near a vaccination site, and is reportedly a response to ensure that similar events do not reoccur.
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) stated, “Each piece of misinformation, each person bullied for getting vaccinated, is a setback in our effort to end this deadly pandemic. Facebook & Twitter have moved far too slowly in responding to this targeted harassment & these dangerous conspiracy theories.”
“Disinformation that causes vaccine hesitancy is going to be a huge obstacle to getting everyone vaccinated and there are no larger players in that than the social media platforms ...We are talking to them … so they understand the importance of misinformation and disinformation and how they can get rid of it quickly.” - White House source to the New York Post
