Biden Admin Silent As Jussie Smollett Guilty Verdict Drops

In Brief:
Biden, Harris, and other prominent Democrats have been silent in the days after Jussie Smollett was convicted of five felonies related to staging a fake hate crime by Trump voters against himself. When Smollett initially claimed the attack in 2019, Biden, Harris, and other Democrats immediately supported his claims and even called for legislation to be passed in response to the incident. Now, Smollett has been convicted and many are mocking the President and Vice President for their silence.

The Background:
In 2019, Jussie Smollett, an actor on the popular “Empire” show, claimed he had been assaulted by two men wearing MAGA hats who put a noose around his neck, poured a bleach-like substance on him, called him a homosexual epithet, and told him he was in was “Trump country”.

Last week, a jury found Smollett guilty of five felonies related to faking the attack and filing a false police report.

In 2019, many Democrats came out immediately in support of the actor even as many others were calling the facts of the case into question.

Kamala Harris initially tweeted, “@JussieSmollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery. This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate.”

Joe Biden also weighed in, even before he had announced he was running for office, “What happened today to @JussieSmollett must never be tolerated in this country. We must stand up and demand that we no longer give this hate safe harbor; that homophobia and racism have no place on our streets or in our hearts. We are with you, Jussie.”

Now, after the verdict has come in, some Republicans are calling out the Democrats' silence: “Jury finds Jussie Smollett guilty of five felonies for staging a fake hate crime in Chicago. Look forward to @VP’s apology for this Tweet calling what happened to Jussie a lynching. And for @JoeBiden’s apology for calling this an example of homophobia and racism,” radio host Clay Travis said on Twitter.
