Aurora James, the designer who created Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's “Tax the Rich” dress, has failed to live up to her own design. The designer owes multiple state and federal agencies thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes. James also has a history of failing to make rent payments and currently has unpaid property taxes on her lavish California home.
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a hypocritical splash at the Met Gala last week when she wore a dress emblazoned with “Tax the Rich” across the back.
At the time, critics pointed out that she wore the dress to a $30,000 per plate dinner.
But the hypocrisy runs even deeper.
Ocasio-Cortez initially praised her “black woman immigrant designer” for the dress. It turns out the designer, Aurora James, doesn’t pay her own taxes.
James’ company, Cultural Brokerage Agency, has open tax warrants related to not withholding federal income tax from employee paychecks in 2018 and 2019. The company also has six federal liens from the IRS totaling over $103,000.
This is despite the fact that Cultural Brokerage Agency received $41,666 in taxpayer money during the pandemic.
James’ also struggles to pay her company’s rent on time, being evicted once in New York, and also has $2500 in property taxes outstanding on her large California home.
“It’s the height of hypocrisy when socialists attend a $30,000 per ticket gala with a message of ‘tax the rich’ while wearing an overpriced dress by a luxury designer who doesn’t pay taxes.” - Republican Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis
