AOC: I Represent More People than US Senator Joe Manchin

In Brief:

On Monday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to react to Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) statement that he will not vote for Biden’s massive Build Back Better legislation. Occasion-Cortez went on to say that she represents as many and “perhaps more” people than Joe Manchin does. But according to population data, Manchin represents more than 1 million more people than Ocasio-Cortez.

The Background:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went on “Morning Joe” to call out Joe Manchin for his unwillingness to vote for Biden’s gigantic Build Back Better legislation. Manchin’s vote against the bill would block the legislation that radical Democrats have been attempting to pass now that Biden is in the White House.

During her interview, Ocasio-Cortez began to talk about how the Senate doesn’t deliver “the will of the people” like the House of Representatives does. She even went so far as to call the Senate an “old boys club,” even though there are multiple female senators.

The strangest part of the interview came when Ocasio-Cortez tried to say that she represented more people than Joe Manchin. She seemed to realize her mistake, and tried to backpedal mid-sentence, but continued to imply her point.

“I mean, it’s a farce in terms of plain democracy, because I represent more, or just as many or more people than Joe Manchin does. Perhaps more,” she said.

The truth is that Joe Manchin represents around 1.8 million West Virginians, while Ocasio-Cortez has about 700,000 New Yorkers in her district.

Notable Quotes:

"It is extremely difficult to hold together a House majority, and especially with the razor-thin margin that we have around this agenda. So the idea that Joe Manchin says he can’t explain this back home to his people is a farce.” - Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
